Rose Almond is a fully self-employed freelance engineer after resigning from her office job in 2015. She has also done freelance work through Upwork. Her total revenue from her self-employed work in 2023 was around 65,400 Canadian dollars, or over $47,500. Almond has found that "the lack of face-to-face interaction" that comes with freelance work can sometimes get lonely. Freelance work has now given Almond a chance to explore another work goal.

You can write people's video game profiles, get paid to pretend to be someone on their dating profiles or even get paid to stand in line for people. Here are three high-paying, in-demand side hustles to consider according to Kristof and Daniella Flores, founder of side hustle blog I Like to Dabble. If you're interested in learning how it works, there are all sorts of online courses on sites like Coursera and tutorials by Google itself. When you take the courses, "you're often connected to the people who are going to hire you in the end," says Kristof.

"We realized we couldn't afford the mortgage and the car payments and everything," Stonestreet told me. Americans work more, vacation less, spend more on healthcare, and die sooner than people in other high-income economies. These factors likely explain why some Americans are moving to countries that aren't generally considered low-cost-of-living locales. She said that living abroad afforded her a degree of flexibility and spontaneity that would be out of reach back home. From their temporary perch in Tirana, Albania, the couple told me via WhatsApp that their only regret about moving abroad was not doing it sooner.

A startup backed by Peter Thiel has released the "first AI software engineer." A little-known startup called Cognition Labs stunned software engineers this week when its team of coding whizzes unveiled what it calls "the first AI software engineer." AdvertisementHowever, Cognition's AI software engineer appears to have an aptitude that's a notch above. Of course, the startup has been pretty careful with how it presents its AI software engineer. These reactions are understandable at a time when software engineers are feeling the heat.

There's a disconnect between the level of AI training that leadership teams believe they're giving their employees and the level of training that managers and employees think they're getting, research shows. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of C-suite executives believe their company fully embraces generative AI, including training for the technology, according to a 2023 Upwork survey. "Executives sometimes have a broad-brush approach to AI training," said Apratim Purakayastha, chief technology officer at Skillsoft. Plus, they were 1.9 times more likely to have a formal generative AI skills program in place for their workforce, as well as 3.8 times more likely to have a well-defined generative AI strategy. Generative AI, Monahan notes, can usher in a new era of productivity — if we let it.

There are dozens of in-demand, non-tech side hustles you can do remotely to earn extra cash — some of which can pay as much as $100 an hour. These jobs have dozens of active listings and offer remote, part-time opportunities. Some of these remote side hustles can pay upwards of $100 per hour, depending on your level of skill and the project. Bookkeepers on Upwork, for example, can charge as much as $175 an hour or, for some projects, $300 an hour. The most salient benefit of pursuing one of these remote side hustles, says Frana, is the flexibility.

I'm an AI and data science lecturer at the University of Gloucestershire in England. Alongside my job, I work as a freelancer on Upwork, where I use generative AI and data science to help businesses automate and improve their processes. During these sessions, companies, often startups, ask for my advice on AI models they are building or problems they encounter.

As the managing director of Upwork's Research Institute, Monahan knows this is an uphill battle. I'm going to make kind of a bold statement: I'm really excited for job disruption. As leaders, and as workers, we can begin to really think about redesigning the job itself. The numbers have prompted AI optimists to predict an economic boom and AI pessimists to worry about a future of fewer jobs. The question isn't how much AI helps out around the office but who it helps — and why. AI, in other words, is raising overall productivity by narrowing the gap between high performers and low performers. Researchers tasked people to write a short story, with and without the help of an AI tool for generating ideas. A few enterprising employers will go all in on hiring job candidates with less experience and boosting their performance with AI.
